“In 2013, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors approved the establishment of the post of San Mateo County Poet Laureate to elevate and celebrate the literary arts and their roles in public life.”
Inaugural Laureate Caroline Goodwin started off her term with the campaign, “Poetry Is,” which highlighted the “rich diversity of San Mateo County’s people, place, and neighborhoods through the power of the spoken word and place-themed poetry.”
Lisa Rosenberg, the county’s second Poet Laureate, showcased the work of local poets and visual artists through her project, “Spoken Art,” wherein San Mateo County residents of all ages were invited to submit poems written in response to a featured artwork.
The popularity of these laureates and their campaigns greatly raised the visibility of poetry throughout the county, and as a nod to her predecessors, current San Mateo County Poet Laureate Aileen Cassinetto is inviting all county residents to submit poems based on the theme, “San Mateo County is Poetry,” addressing the Mural below by North Fair Oaks native Jose Castro. Please submit up to 3 poems (no more than 50 lines each) in word format, along with a short bio. The deadline is midnight of February 29, 2020.
